In order to diversify the country's tourism growth, USD 28 million (MVR 444 million) has been set to invest in the industry. The amount has been allocated in the national budget for the year 2018. Projects include reclamation of land from lagoons and building domestic airports.

Out of the $28 million, $21 is marked for the development of domestic airports in 4 atolls. $6.9 million would be spent on the reclamation projects.

This would open up more opportunities for investors and will make travelling to far atolls easier for tourists. The increase in airports would open up jobs while allowing operators to increase destinations.
